The Event

Rolls-Royce Testbed 80 in Derby, UK is the world’s largest indoor aerospace testbed. The completion of the project was a major milestone for the company, after a £90m investment and almost three years of construction. The new Testbed is the largest in the world with an internal area of 7,500m2, making it larger than a Premiership football pitch. The prestigious worldwide opening ceremony was attended by the Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for the Department of Business Energy & Industrial Strategy, it was a hybrid event with 60 delegates in the event space and a further 120 participating live, online.

Solution

When Rolls-Royce approached NAV for AV support for the official opening of Testbed 80, they required a seamless, elegant AV solution for what was to be a prestigious hybrid event. The space itself was vast, for visual impact our Project Manager suggested architectural effect lighting to highlight the impressive engineering within the building. A mixture of pink and blue LED fixtures were used to colour wash the walls and uplight the impressive jet engine, suspended from the testbed roof. Along with the coloured wash lighting, warm white 4000k stage wash and lectern spots completed the  lighting set-up.

60 socially distanced guests attended the event, with a further 120 joining online. It was important the online delegates were as much a part of proceedings as those that were there in person. To enable the the people on stage to present and interact with both audiences, a 16x9ft screen with a 'Gallery View' of the online viewers in the presenters eyeline, was positioned directly behind the live audience. Live cameras in the event space combined with a mix of Powerpoint and pre-recorded content, ensured the online viewers were able to both experience and participate in the opening ceremony.

The backdrop to our stage set-up was a 16x9ft screen with a high brightness projector sited behind. The screen content was carefully designed to create a dynamic wall behind the presenters. On-screen corporate logos, branding and general content was then ideally placed to be captured by the cameras of the assembled press. One of our stylish presenter lecterns with the Rolls Royce logo completed the simple, but visually effective set-up.

Comment

Our client commented not only on the visual aesthetics of the lighting and staging, but also on the quality of the sound throughout the event. Our HK Elements PA system is low profile, but powerful, it employs line-array technology and delivers unrivalled speech intelligibility for corporate events. The client recommended NAV to a colleague, we then had a similar event booked in our diary for the following month.
